What does Motown stand for?

Motown is a portmanteau of Motor Town, a nickname for the city of Detroit, Michigan. The name Motown was first used by Berry Gordy, Jr. in 1959 when he founded the Motown record label. The name Motown was chosen to reflect the city's heritage as a major center for the automotive industry.
