When is Canada Day and what does it celebrate?

When: July 1

Celebration: National holiday of Canada

Canada Day commemorates the enactment of the British North America Act, which unified three British colonies into a single Dominion on July 1, 1867: the Province of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Originally called *Dominion Day,* it was formally re-named "Canada Day" in 1982 following the patriation of the Canadian constitution from the United Kingdom.
