The festival begins with a greased pole climb at the town's main square, where competitors attempt to climb a 10-meter-high pole to grab a cured pork shoulder (jamón) hanging at the top. The event is followed by the opening ceremony and the singing of the festival anthem.
2. The Tomato Fight
The main event of La Tomatina is the massive tomato fight, which lasts for approximately one hour. Participants come armed with tomatoes and engage in a frenzied battle, throwing and smashing tomatoes at each other. The streets of Buñol run red with tomato puree as the participants soak each other in tomato juice and pulp.
3. The Water Fight
After the tomato fight ends, the town's firefighters intervene to clean the streets and the participants using powerful water hoses. Participants continue to engage in a water fight, playfully spraying each other with water until the streets are left clean.
4. The Music and Festivities
Throughout the festival, live music performances and street parties take place in Buñol, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The town is filled with music, dancing, and people celebrating in the spirit of La Tomatina.
5. The Clean-Up
Once the festival concludes, the town of Buñol transforms into a hive of activity as the clean-up process begins. Firefighters, volunteers, and local residents join forces to hose down the streets, wash away the tomato residue, and restore the town to its normal state.
