How to prepare for your first Burning Man

Burning Man is not like other festivals that feature big names in the music industry playing live concerts according to a set schedule. Instead, Burning Man is a participant-driven festival, dedicated to art, expression, community and self-reliance -- that is what sets it apart. One week out of the year, tens of thousands of people gather in the heart of Nevada's Black Rock Desert to experience art exhibits, theme camps, art cars, sculptures, costumes and, ultimately, the climactic burning of the 40 foot tall effigy, before disappearing without a trace. First time "Burners" --festival attendees-- have a lot of preparation to do before showing up.

Bring all necessities with you to Burning Man. Out in the Nevada desert, it's you vs. the elements, and at the end of August, the elements are hostile and unforgiving. Bring the essentials -- including food, water, shelter, sunscreen, appropriate clothes, toiletries and basic first-aid supplies. For a complete, comprehensive list of what to bring to Burning Man, visit the official Burning Man webpage.
