How to Play LIke a Rock Star on the Guitar

Eddie Van Halen, Ace Frehley of Kiss and Ted Nugent are some of the rock legends we think of when we think about guitar heroes. These guys have been around so long because they combine the playing talent it takes to be a rock star on guitar with star quality and in-your-face attitude. Playing guitar like a rock star is about enjoying the performance as much as the audience does. Learning how to play guitar like a rock star will help you steal the show the next time you hit the stage.

Decide on an image. You want to know who you are when you are onstage. The less contrived the better. The image you portray should incorporate who you are only magnified. The image includes your clothes. Don't be afraid to dress the way you want to dress. You're a rock star. You're allowed to be eccentric.

When you play in front of a crowd, you want to be sure you stand out. Every move you make has to be larger than life. Learn how to throw your head back when you hit the high notes in your solo. Don't be afraid to drop to your knees while slamming out power chords. Run, jump and stick your tongue out at the audience. Keep plenty of guitar picks on hand. Every rock guitar player tosses them to their adoring fans.

Design a signature solo. All guitar heroes have one. Include slides, bends, tapping and lots of whammy bar. This is the solo you will be playing for your extended spot in every show and your fans should know it note for note.

Subscribe to "Guitar Player" or "Guitar World" magazine and learn all the latest solo techniques. Know all the latest gear and be sure you have most of it. This includes special effects pedals you may only use once and an amplifier that's taller than you are. Consider Marshall. They are still the iconic amp of the well-dressed rock star.

Practice your scales. You can grab a set of scales at your local music store or find them online. Scales are good exercise and help with your ear training. Practice in the privacy of your home so you don't ruin your image, but make sure you practice.

Pay attention to the music. Performing is only half of the gig. You need to be able to write good songs and at least be able to notate music in the popular guitar tablature format. You don't want someone else writing your solos for you.

Strive for perfection in the studio and fell onstage. The studio is the time to be professional and perfect the music. Show up on time, do your parts and hang out while the rest of the band does theirs. When you're onstage, don't stress about playing every solo perfectly. Live playing is the time to feel the music and let yourself go. It doesn't matter if you miss a note. As long as the crowd is screaming, you're doing your part as a rock-and-roll guitar star.
