What Are the Duties of a Conductor?

Music conductors are those who are masters at their craft and are in charge of directing or conducting an ensemble of musicians, including orchestras, bands, choirs, operas or other musical group.
  1. Hire Musicians

    • Oftentimes the conductor is the music director and will be in charge of auditioning and hiring musicians for a musical ensemble.

    Choose Music

    • The music performed by an ensemble is also carefully chosen by the conductor based on the abilities of the group and audience demand.

    Lead Rehearsals

    • The duties of a conductor include organizing and leading music rehearsals with the group. The number of rehearsals also depends upon the abilities and experience of the group.

    Interpret the Music

    • The musical knowledge and experience of the conductor fully suits him to direct the musicians in the interpretation of music, including tempo, phrasing, quality of sound and dynamics.

    Master of Ceremonies

    • The conductor not only conducts a concert, but also acts as master of ceremonies as well. She will usually welcome an audience, introduce musical numbers and guest musicians and direct applause to particular soloists.
