How to Play the Two Reed Harmonica

Two reed, or double reed, harmonicas come in two types: octave harmonicas and tremolo harmonicas. Octave harmonicas are constructed with double holes, each containing two reeds tuned an octave apart. Tremolo harmonicas also have double holes containing two reeds, but the reeds are tuned to the same note with one reed slightly higher than the other. Like octave harmonicas, both reeds in a single hole for a tremolo are either draw or blow so they sound together producing a vibrating effect in tremolo harmonicas and a full bodied sound in octave harmonicas. Two reed harmonicas have a similar note layout to the more common 10 hole diatonic harmonica and as such can be played in a similar manner, however, two reed harmonicas are typically played in the same key as the harmonica is tuned.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the harmonica with the thumb and index finger of your left hand slightly to the left of the center of the harmonica. Ensure that the low notes are on the left side of the harmonica. Slide the harmonica to the base of your thumb.

    • 2

Hold the harmonica with the tip of the thumb and index finger on your right hand touching the tip of the thumb and index finger on your left hand.

    • 3

Cup the front of the harmonica with the three remaining fingers on your left hand. Wrap your right hand over your left to create a large airtight cup.

    • 4

Practice blowing and drawing a single note by covering a single hole with your mouth. Play by breathing through the reeds rather than sucking or blowing air through them.

    • 5

Open your hands while playing to increasing the size of the airtight cup and produce higher volume. Close the airtight cup to mute the sound.

    • 6

Play chords by covering several holes on the harmonica and drawing or blowing air through all the reeds at the same time.

    • 7

Use varying breathing patterns to create different rhythms while you play.
