How to Create a Poster about One of the Elements of Music

One of the major elements of music is rhythm. Rhythm is sometimes referred to as "the beat." Standard musical notation uses various symbols to represent different rhythm notes. You can easily make a poster that represents the hierarchy of basic rhythm notes. This type of poster also makes an excellent classroom resource tool that students can refer to when trying to learn about the different kinds of notes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of poster board into a large triangle.

    • 2

Use a ruler to draw four horizontal lines dividing the triangle into five equal sections.

    • 3

Draw a whole note in the top section. (See Resources for what each rhythm note looks like if you are unsure.)

    • 4

Draw two half notes in the section section.

    • 5

Draw four quarter notes in the third section.

    • 6

Draw eight eighth notes in the fourth section.

    • 7

Draw sixteen sixteenth notes in the fifth section.

    • 8

Explain to your audience or class that whole notes generally get four beats, half notes get two, quarter notes get one, eighth notes get a half of a beat, and sixteenth notes each get one fourth of a beat. Also explain how the poster represents ways you can divide a standard measure of four beats (one whole note, two half notes, etc.).
