How to Type Music Notes on Computers

If you're writing about music or expressing a musical thought, you may want to insert a music symbol into your text. Although you may not see musical symbols on a standard computer keyboard, you can learn a series of keystrokes that will produce two versions of a musical note. These two versions are the single eighth note and the connected eighth notes, which are commonly used rhythm notes in music.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the point within a document or email at which you want to insert a music symbol.

    • 2

Activate the Number Lock function on your keyboard by pressing the "Num Lock" key.

    • 3

Press and hold down the "Alt" button on either side of the space bar.

    • 4

Press the "1" key and then the "3" key as you continue to hold down the "Alt" key in order to create an individual eighth note.

    • 5

Press the "1" key followed by the "4" key as you hold down "Alt" if you want to create a pair of eighth notes that are connected.
