Conga Drumming Lessons

Conga is a style of drum based music that originated in Africa and spread, through the slave trade, to Cuba and then the rest of the world. The conga drum is a tall instrument that narrows from the top to the bottom.

Pete Lockett's website, for example, offers lessons for those at both beginning and intermediate levels. Alternatively, the Berklee Shares program offers lessons on Latin as well as Afro Cuban conga drumming lessons that people can download free of charge.

    • Any community near a decent sized town or city is sure to have individuals and music schools that offer lessons on this drumming style. Perform a quick Internet search, look through your phonebook or visit a nearby instrument store to locate resources near you.

    Types of Conga Drums

    • There are three types of conga drums. The first is the tumba, which plays the lowest pitch. In the middle is the conga and the high-pitched variety is known as the quinto. The three are known collectively as conga drums.

    Learning Expectations

    • In initial lessons, students can expect to learn basic drumming techniques and rhythms of this Afro-Cuban inspired genre of music. This includes different hand techniques such as open strokes, slap strokes and use of the finger tips and heel of one's hands.
