How to Teach Three-Beat Music in Second Grade

The three-beat pattern is a commonly used rhythmic pattern in music. This beat pattern is used in musical styles such as the waltz. If you see a "3/4" written at the beginning of a piece of music, this is the time signature. A 3/4 time signature indicates a cycle of three beats within a song. You can teach this beat pattern to students in second grade by using a combination of illustrations and activities.

Instructions

    • 1

Play a recording of a song that features a three-beat pattern. A well-known type of song that uses 3/4 time is the waltz. Ask your students to pat the steady beat as they listen.

    • 2

Write "3/4" on the board and explain that a song that has this time signature has a repeating cycle of three beats throughout the song.

    • 3

Give your students classroom percussion instruments such as hand drums, rhythm sticks, maracas and tambourines.

    • 4

Instruct your students to play along as you clap a three-beat pattern.

    • 5

Teach your students a three-beat conducting pattern. Bring your hand down in front of you from chest level to waist level. This marks the first beat. Gently move your hand out to your side on the second beat. On the third beat, bring your hand back up to its starting position. Once your students imitate the pattern and become comfortable with it, allow them to conduct the class as the class pats or plays the beat pattern.
