Keyboarding Lessons & Games

The keyboard is a diverse instrument that makes it possible for advanced pianists and novices to experiment and play games. Your enjoyment of the instrument often has a proportional relationship to your level of skill. For this reason, it is prudent to have fun playing the instrument while learning some basic keyboard techniques. While these games won't turn you into a virtuoso, they will give you some basic techniques that will allow you to enjoy your keyboard as a hobbyist.
  1. Musical Chairs Game

    • Anyone can play this simple game. Keyboards come with several styles of music already built into the device. Have the contestants for this game sit in chairs in a circle. Choose from one of the many default settings on the keyboard. When you press the start button, the players should start moving around the chairs. While they are moving around, remove one of the chairs. When it comes time to stop, discontinue the music. This will be the cue for everyone to sit down. Rather than being out, let the person without a seat select the next rhythm on the keyboard.

    Finger Independence

    • The metronome is used as an image button on many keyboards.

This activity can be a game and a lesson. Start by turning on the metronome that comes with almost every keyboard. It will usually have a symbol that looks like a metronome. Start at the slowest tempo possible and place all five fingers of the right hand on a separate white key on the keyboard. Slowly, and without moving any other fingers, lower the thumb to press a key. Do this with each finger and then switch hands. Have a contest with a friend to see who can do this the best without moving any fingers. This will develop finger independence.

    Musical Memory

    • Play three pitches on the keyboard and have your friend sing them back to you. If your friend gets them right, play four pitches. Continue until they make a mistake, then let your friend quiz you by playing pitches for you to identify. This will help you to locate pitches on the piano, develop a memory for the keys and improve your ear. This is a great game for teachers to play with students in a classroom. Practicing this game regularly will help you improve your memory and your pitch in relation to the keyboard.

    Music Scales Lesson

    • Purchase a beginners book on the piano. Make sure it has a list of scales with proper fingerings. Practice these scales with each hand independently first and then slowly begin to play the scales with both hands together. If you take the time to learn all of the major scales, your hands will begin to learn to work together, and soon you will be able to play any piece you wish. Scales serve as an indispensable technique that will help build your skill and improve your abilities. This is a basic lesson that all musicians must learn.
