Obtain the correct hand position. The first three main keys should be covered by the index, middle and ring finger of the left hand with the thumb covering the thumb key. The right hand should cover the three keys after the head joint with the right thumb supporting the flute.
Obtain a fingering chart to check your fingerings. There are several finger combinations that must be learned. A fingering chart is the simplest way of learning fingerings for the beginner.
Play all of the major scales on the flute. Start with a C-major scale and move to "F," "Bb" and "Eb." Once you have learned those scales learn "G," "D" and "E." Each of these scales has a minimal number of flats and sharps to help avoid confusion.
