Unscrew the ligature screws to remove it from the mouthpiece. Place the reed in its case and gently remove the mouthpiece from the barrel. The mouthpiece represents one of the most important and delicate pieces of a clarinet. Place the mouthpiece cap over the mouthpiece and put it in the clarinet case.
Hold the clarinet's barrel with your right hand and the upper joint with your left. Strategically place your left hand directly over the finger holes -- this is the safest place to hold to prevent key bending. Twist the barrel slightly to remove. Place in the clarinet case.
Remove the bell from the lower joint. Hold the lower joint with your left hand and the bell with your right. Wrap the fingers of your left hand around the hole pads closest to the bell. This should prevent key bending.
Change hands holding the lower joint. Hold the same area with your right hand. Grasp the upper joint directly over the finger holes with your left. Press down the upper joint's finger holes to lift the bridge key. If you fail to lift the bridge key, it could bend when separating the upper and lower joints. Gently twist the two joints back and forth to remove. Place the last two pieces in the clarinet case, close the lid and take a deep breath. Disassembly is complete.
