1. Sit in front of the piano and center yourself with your fingers resting on the middle C key.
2. Feel the key you are resting on-its shape, texture, and position. Think “middle C” to yourself.
3. Locate the three white keys to the right of the middle C key. These are the keys for the C major scale.
4. Visualize the position of these three white keys in relation to the middle C key. Think “white, white, black” to yourself.
5. Feel the shape and texture of each key as you play the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C). Remember which key is which by repeating the key name to yourself as you play it.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 several times until you can easily find and play the C major scale without hesitation.
7. Practice playing the C major scale in both hands, starting with the right hand and then the left hand.
8. Once you are comfortable playing the C major scale in both hands, try playing it in different octaves and variations, such as ascending and descending scales, arpeggios, and chords.
9. Continue to practice playing the C major position until it becomes second nature to you.
