What is the basic story behind CATS musical?

CATS is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. The story revolves around a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, who gather once a year on the Jellicle Ball to decide which of them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new life.

The Jellicles are a diverse group of cats, each with its own unique personality and talents. Among them are the wise Old Deuteronomy, the mischievous Mistoffelees, the beautiful Grizabella, and the rebellious Macavity. As the night of the Jellicle Ball approaches, tensions rise and rivalries emerge, but ultimately the cats come together to celebrate their shared identity and to send one of their own on a journey to a new life.

CATS has been a critical and commercial success since its debut in the West End in 1981, and has gone on to be performed in numerous countries around the world. The musical is known for its iconic music, including the songs "Memory" and "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," as well as its elaborate costumes and choreography.
