Plot Summary:
Helen Stoner, a young woman, seeks Sherlock Holmes' help after the death of her sister, Julia. Both sisters lived in a remote manor with their stepfather, Dr. Roylott, a strange and menacing man who kept venomous Indian snakes in his house.
Julia died under mysterious circumstances, a chilling scream followed by silence, just as her sister is now experiencing. Both women had been terrorized by a strange, whistling sound at night, followed by the presence of something cold and slimy in their rooms.
Holmes investigates the manor, finding various clues: a strange bell-rope attached to Julia's bed, an odd ventilation shaft leading to Dr. Roylott's room, and a curious Indian swamp adder kept in a locked box. He discovers the ventilation shaft is connected to Dr. Roylott's room, and the bell-rope serves as a means to lure a snake down to the bedroom.
On the night of the planned attack, Holmes and Dr. Watson hide in Julia's room, waiting for the "speckled band" to strike. They witness Dr. Roylott's attempt to kill Helen using his trained snake, but Holmes, anticipating the attack, thwarts the plan.
Dr. Roylott, in a desperate attempt to escape, is fatally injured by his own pet, a victim of his own cunning plan. Justice is served, and Helen is safe from the venomous reptile.
