First, make some decisions about what types of performances will be featured. Will the show be strictly musical, or will other talents (juggling, miming, etc.) be included? Should the content be filtered as far as appropriateness, and if so, what material will or won't be allowed? What ages will the show include? What categories will you establish? Possible musical categories might include solo singing, group singing, instrumental music and dance. When will performers audition? Who will preside over the auditions? How many performers will be allowed in the show? When will rehearsals be held?
You will need to recruit judges for the show. Possible qualifications for judges may include experience in the arts and/or recognition with the school and community. You must come up with a scoring system that you discuss with judges ahead of time. For instance, you might score performers on stage presence, precision of performance and audience reaction. The number 5 could be your highest score for each part, equaling a possible high total of 15. Instruct judges how to record their scores, and make sure someone is willing to tally the scores once they have been turned in. Determine what prizes will be offered.
To execute a successful talent show, you must secure some key elements. Where and when will the show be held? Make sure your facilities will be large enough for the projected crowd. Try to choose a time when the largest possible audience can attend. Will you charge admission, and if so, how much? What will the funds go toward? Also, make sure your facilities include proper sound and lighting equipment. Unless you plan to run these elements yourself, you will need to enlist someone to do the sound and lighting for you. Print out programs so that the audience can follow along during the show.
When it comes time for the show, remember that no plan is foolproof. Despite your best organizational efforts, there may be snags here and there. Do your best to accommodate any unexpected events, relax and have fun. Also, don't forget to acknowledge and thank all those involved in the show.
