Learn all you can about DJ'ing to improve your skills. Study the art of DJ'ing and how to produce a party atmosphere. Read books at your local bookstore or library, conduct online research using your search engine to find useful resources and contact established DJs to gather as much information about the craft as possible. This will help you understand new trends in the DJ'ing industry, terminologies, styles of music and types of DJs, such as special events DJs (mobile DJs) and club/ pub DJs. (See Reference 2)
Purchase your own DJ equipment, if you do not already have it, including a mixer, speakers and amplifiers, and a dual source of audio such as dual mini-disk players and variable-speed CD players. The equipment, though costly, is necessary if you want to be ready to perform a gig. You may need to find a friend or local social/entertainment facility that already has some DJ equipment you can rely on if you lack the money to immediately purchase all the equipment you need. (See Reference 3)
Refine your skills before you play for a live audience. Practice selecting and mixing music to audiences at home, in your local club or in a social/community center until you are confident about your skills. Plenty of practice is important because it will not only help you refine your skills but also help you select and play the right music for the right audience. (See Reference 3)
Write a cover letter and resume once you are confident about your skills and have gained some experience. The cover letter and resume should include your contact information, such as your mailing address and phone number, and a list of previous gigs. You may need to state your readiness to feature as a guest DJ. (See Resources 1 and 2)
Submit your cover letter and resume to DJ agencies and booking societies. Sign up with the agencies and societies by entering your details in the registration fields and agreeing to set terms and conditions. When you are accepted, the agencies and booking societies will publicly promote and list you as a contact DJ in their database. (See Resources 1 and 2)
