How to Power an Amp From an Outlet

An amp, or amplifier, is a device that uses electricity to boost the sound of a wave input. The most common use of these is for home audio, namely as guitar amplifiers. A guitar amplifier can range in size from under a foot tall to towering stacks commonly seen at rock concerts. An amp will always have at least one input, almost always for a guitar cable plug, a volume control and often a graphic equalizer controlling low, mid-range and high. They are quite easy to power from an outlet, because this is how they are meant to be used.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the volume on the amp all the way down to zero. This will ensure that no damage is done when it is turned on.

    • 2

Plug your guitar or other instrument into the amp by plugging a guitar cable into the instrument, with the other end plugged into the input on the amp.

    • 3

Check the power switch to ensure that it is off.

    • 4

Plug the power cable in the back of the amp either directly into the wall, or into a surge protector, which is then plugged into the wall.

    • 5

Turn the power on at the surge protector if you are using one. Turn the power on the amp by flipping the power switch to the "on" position. It will often glow red when it is powered.

    • 6

Turn the volume up to the desired level.
