The Cactus Cafe & Bar (cactuscafe.org) is an acoustic-only venue on the University of Austin's campus. It has been listed by "Billboard" magazine as one of the top 15 clubs nationwide for both big-name performers and new talent. Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco are just a few of the major performers who appeared at this club when they were starting out. The Cactus Cafe is located in the Texas Union Building.
The Austin Continental Club (continentalclub.com) has a colorful history. Established in 1957, it has gone through multiple evolutions, from swank supper club, to Austin's first burlesque, to a venue for musicians from many genres, including Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Butthole Surfers. It features both an indoor stage and a two-tiered outdoor performing area complete with viewing patios. It offers a splendid view of the Red River music district and a truly one-of-a-kind outdoor concert atmosphere. The excellent yet inexpensive selection of beers is a bonus.
Grab some delicious barbecue before catching big outdoor acts from both local and international performers at Stubb's (stubbsaustin.com). Mouth-watering fried green tomatoes and brisket are the perfect appetizers for a great variety of shows, from Lauryn Hill to Matt Schofield to the Decemberists. Or, try the Sunday Gospel brunch, which features a world-renowned, all-you-can-eat Southern buffet combined with fantastic live gospel music.
The Parish (theparishaustin.com) is perhaps the top indoor venue for live music in Austin. Located in the old downtown 6th Street district, the club is well-known for its extremely good acoustics as well as its beautiful interior and historical building. Serious music fans can hear both established legends and exciting new independent artists of all musical genres sound their very best here.
