List of Heavy Metal Festivals

Heavy metal festivals bring together people who share the same musical interests. Most concerts are based around the idea of several different bands performing together, over one or a series of days. Usually there are one or two big-name headliner bands and several smaller, less mainstream bands that perform. Sometimes, depending on the popularity of the festival, there are several genres of music in addition to heavy metal. Most festivals are held near a campground and most of the concertgoers camp out and relax in-between musical performances, but some festivals just focus on bringing fans of the music together.
  1. Rockstar Mayhem Festival

    • The Rockstar Mayhem Festival is a yearly concert that focuses primarily on popular heavy metal bands. They tour together across the United States. These concerts are usually at amphitheaters instead of outside on a campground. As of 2011, the lineup is Disturbed, Godsmack, Megadeath, Machine Head, In Flames and Trivium. Tickets can be ordered directly through the site or through popular ticket vendors. Concerts occur throughout the summer.

    Bloodstock Open Air

    • Bloodstock is a more traditional music festival with open air stages and on-site camping. Bloodstock takes place in Catton Hall, United Kingdom. Concert dates for 2011 are August 12 to 14. Bloodstock has a pure metal lineup and the concert is held each year, during roughly the same dates. There are over 40 bands that perform. Some are big names and some are unsigned. There are numerous bands and campsites available. They have food on-site and grills on public areas of each camping area. There are four camping areas, one of which is family-friendly and enforces a curfew. According to the site, camping runs two extra days so that concert-goers can arrive early, set up, see the music they wish to see and then leave the next day. Tickets are purchased through their website.

    Maryland Deathfest

    • The Maryland Deathfest, or MDF, has been an annual event for over nine years. It is held near Baltimore. They use the concert as a venue to showcase musicians who are wildly popular underground but not mainstreamed. The concert is held at the Sonar. There are hotels and camping grounds nearby, but not on the same premises as the concert.

    Sweden Rock Festival

    • The Sweden Rock Festival has a mix of big names, such as Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Whitesnake and Rob Zombie, with several other, less well-known bands. There is camping on-site. Camping is first-come, first-served so if you're planning on staying then it is wise to get there early. It is run by the same group that does the Sweden Rock Cruise and Sweden Rock Magazine. Tickets are purchased through their website. Information is available in English as well as Swedish.
