How to Start My Rapping Career

Rapping is a form of poetry popular in the hip-hop culture. To rap, you must talk or sing relatively similar tones in a rhythmic manner over a beat or background music and these words must follow one of many various rhyme schemes. Rap music is a soulful expression of different human conditions, desires and the hip-hop lifestyle. While making it in the entertainment industry can be difficult, there are several things you can do to give yourself an advantage over other performers.

Instructions

    • 1

Write lyrics. These lyrics should express how you feel, knowing that there are others out there that feel the same way or they should contain a catchy phrase that people can remember and be encouraged to participate with as you perform.

    • 2

Create beats or find a local producer. You need to have music added to the majority of your raps if you want to become famous. If you cannot make exciting or powerful beats, meet someone who does. Local producers often make music at home and will record you and give you a beat for the lowest possible prices.

    • 3

Volunteer to perform for free. Once you have songs made, do not expect instant fame and riches. You must get your name known by the public. To do that, you may have to perform at open mic nights, volunteer events or even schedule your own free events.

    • 4

Participate in contests and competitions. Freestyle rap battles and other local competitions help to spread the word about you and your music.

    • 5

Put your songs and information on the Internet to get even more exposure. Social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube allow you to network with other performers and fans outside of your local area.

    • 6

Find an agent. Once you have at least five well-recorded songs and are known around your town, begin to send songs to agents, who have contacts with major companies and artists. You can search for listings of agents online or in books at the library or in bookstores.

    • 7

Make friends with as many people as possible. Often, hip-hop culture encourages people to be "hard" or to represent certain ideals without letting anyone talk them out of it. They, then, begin to get in fights and isolate themselves from each other. However, this can be crippling to your career. If you make friends with somebody instead of enemies, they may reveal to you that they are willing to record you for a discount or for free, they may know agents or other important people in the music business and they might just be your one chance to make it big.

Do not give up. You will be repeatedly told that you cannot make it until you actually do. Use all negative comments to inspire yourself to work even harder. While it may be easier for some than others to start a career as a rapper, nobody gets by without doing any work.
