Why Will a Laser Disc Not Play?

A laser disc is used to hold different types of media, such as music or video. While they are very versatile, they also must be taken care of so that they continue to work. If a laser disc fails to play, there may be several contributing factors.
  1. Failure of Disc to Play

    • If your media laser disc fails to play properly, remove the disc. Assess the disc for any issues that may roughen the surface of the laser disc. Some issues to look for are scratches, fingerprints and cracks.

    Scratches

    • Simple scratches can be repaired with a cream purchased at any store that sells laser discs. Also, toothpaste may be used for minor scratches. Apply the cream to the scratches as per instructions on the container and then wipe off in a straight line to ensure all cream is removed. Reassess the disc for any remaining cream or scratches and then attempt to play the disc.

    Fingerprints

    • Fingerprints are the main cause for failure of discs to play. The easiest way to remove fingerprints is with mild dish soap and water. Apply a small amount of dish soap to your disc and add water. Rinse the entire disc, then wipe with a lint-free rag to dry. Attempt to play the disc.

    Cracks

    • If the disc is cracked, nothing can be done to salvage it and make it playable. Dispose of it.

    Media Device Failure

    • If none of these issues is present, check the media player by inserting another disc and identifying if it plays. If the new disc does not play then the media playing device is bad.
