How to Use the Waves L2 After Apogee UV22

Digital audio is a very common format for music playback and recording, but it is somewhat limited when compared to analog audio. Unlike analog audio, digital audio is composed of discrete samples of data. The number of samples is governed by the underlying technology used by the digital audio. For example, compact disc audio uses 48,000 samples per second of audio. This can lead to audio quantization, which reduces the overall quality of the recording. There are methods to mitigate audio quantization, including applying noise shapers such as the Waves L2 audio plugin or the Apogee UV22 process.

Things You'll Need

  • Audio host application, such as Ableton Live
  • Digital audio conversion device with Apogee UV22 encoding
  • 110-ohm audio cables

Instructions

    • 1

Open your audio host application. Open an audio file that you wish to process.

    • 2

Open the Wave L2 plugin as an effects processor in your host application.

    • 3

Play the sound file, and adjust the “Threshold” slider downward if you see the “Gain Reduction” indicator appear.

    • 4

Connect the audio outputs from your computer to the inputs on the digital audio conversion device. You can turn on UV22 encoding by setting a switch on this device. Refer to the product manual for the exact location of this switch.

    • 5

Turn on the digital audio conversion device. Play the sound file again. The sound is routed through the Wave L2 software plugin, then out through the audio outputs of the computer and into the digital audio conversion device. This device then applies the UV22 encoding. The audio outputs from this device can then be routed to a mixer for recording and amplification.
