Phillips was born and raised in Dublin. His father was a professional singer and his mother was a pianist and choir director at their church. Phillips began playing the guitar and piano at a young age, and by the time he was 15 he was playing in local bands. After high school, he studied music at the Dublin College of Music.
In 1980, Phillips moved to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After graduating from Berklee, he began working as a professional musician and soon became involved in the Christian music industry. He released his debut album, "David Phillips," in 1986, and it was met with critical acclaim. He has since released over 20 albums, including a number of highly successful albums released internationally throughout his career.
In addition to his music, Phillips is also an author, speaker and retreat leader. He has written several books on spirituality, including "The Heart of Worship" (1996) and "The Call to Holiness" (2002). He has also given workshops and retreats all over the world, sharing his insights on spiritual growth and transformation.
Phillips currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife and three children. He continues to tour and perform his music, and he is also a frequent guest speaker at conferences and retreats.
Phillips' music is characterized by its blend of traditional and contemporary sounds. He draws inspiration from a variety of musical genres, including rock, folk, and Celtic music. His lyrics are often based on Scripture, and they focus on themes such as love, faith, and hope.
