Sousa was born in Washington, D.C. in 1854. He began studying music at an early age and showed great talent. He joined the United States Marine Band in 1872 and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1880, he was the conductor of the band.
Sousa led the Marine Band for 35 years, during which time he composed many of his most famous marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Semper Fidelis." He also wrote several operettas and other works.
Sousa retired from the Marine Band in 1929, but he continued to compose music until his death in 1932. His music is still performed by bands and orchestras all over the world and he is considered to be one of the greatest bandmasters of all time.
