Bolin was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He began playing guitar at age six and by the age of 17 he was playing professionally in local bands. In 1969, he joined the band Zephyr, which released two albums before disbanding in 1971. Bolin then joined the James Gang, replacing Joe Walsh. He recorded three albums with the band before leaving in 1973.
In 1975, Bolin joined Deep Purple, replacing Ritchie Blackmore. He recorded one album with the band, Come Taste the Band, before leaving in 1976. Bolin died of a drug overdose in Miami Beach, Florida, on December 4, 1976, at the age of 25.
Bolin was a highly skilled guitarist who was influenced by a wide range of musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. He was known for his fluid playing style and his ability to create complex melodies and solos. He was also a talented songwriter and vocalist.
