How to Make a CD Catalog

The world's largest music collection, owned by Paul Mawhinney of Pennsylvania, consisted of 3 million albums before it was sold on eBay in 2008. Even if your CD collection is nowhere near that size, finding a specific CD can be challenging without an organizational system. A CD catalog helps you organize your compact discs. It makes them easy to locate. Making your own CD catalog is not difficult--it just takes time and patience. Imagine how much easier it will be to listen to the songs you love once you have your collection organized.

Instructions

  1. Organizing your Compact Discs

    • 1

Decide how you want to organize your discs. Most people choose to group CDs by the same artist together in their CD catalogs. You may decide to further subdivide your CD collection based on genre or period.

    • 2

Begin to sort your CD collection based on the criteria you have chosen. For example, if you are organizing your collection by artist, put all CDs from the same artist together. Then, once you have them broken down by artist, continue to sort them based on additional criteria of your choice, such as genre or year. .

    • 3

Go to your computer and bring up a word processing program. Create a table with 3 columns and as many rows as you have CDs.

    Creating Your CD Catalog

    • 4

Use the table to index your discs by artist and title. Put the artist's name in the first row of your table. Place the album name in the second row.

    • 5

Fill in the third row of the table with the CD location. The exact procedure you will use to index your discs depends on how you store them. If you have them in a CD tower or a CD book, enter them into the table in the order they appear on the tower or in the book. If you use a tower, write down the position each CD occupies in the tower in the third column of your table. If you store them in a book, use this column to note what page each CD can be found on. If you store them in a CD changer in your CD player, note the position of each CD in the changer.

    • 6

Decorate your CD catalog as you see fit. You can use different fonts for different band names, or insert pictures into the catalog.

    • 7

Print your CD catalog, and use it to easily locate your compact discs.
