I will show you how to create a makeshift baffle for drum recording.

Instructions

    • 1

For a drier sound reminiscent of the '70s style of drums you'll want to eliminate as much of the room sound as possible.

    • 2

Take two boom stands and raise them to the level of the cymbals. You'll want to face the mic stands towards each other creating an equidistant, right angle.

Pull out both both so that they cross each other in a straight line. Ultimately, the booms will be horizontal and the stands vertical.

    • 3

Drape a packing blanket across them. For extra support you can pull the excess blanket over the "elbow" of the stands.

If possible try to create three of these makeshift baffles. Two placed on either side of the kit and one in front.

It may be necessary to apply gaffing tape to ensure the blankets don't slip. It shouldn't be a problem if the blankets are untouched; however, if the drummer happens to get up and bump into them they will collapse easily.

This will help out in a pinch.
