Young, who was born in March 1955 in Scotland, first started playing guitar at five years old. He dabbled early on by playing a guitar that belonged to another child in his neighborhood.
After his early introduction to the guitar, Young restrung a family banjo as a guitar so that he could learn how to play.
Young did not get his first guitar until after his family moved from Scotland to Australia in 1963. One of his brothers gave him an old Hoftner guitar.
Young bought his trademark Gibson SG after seeing it in a catalog in the mid-1960s. Young went on to play Gibson SG guitars throughout his career.
After Young had his own guitar, his older brother George started giving him lessons.
Young and his brother Malcolm formed AC/DC in 1973. The band went on to sell more than 71 million records. "Rolling Stone" magazine ranked Young the ninety-sixth greatest guitar player of all time.
