Metallica was formed in 1981 by Lars Ulrich, who was 18 years old at the time. The other original members were James Hetfield, who was 19, and Ron McGovney, who was 19. In 1983, Kirk Hammett joined the band at the age of 20, and Cliff Burton joined at the age of 22.
