Megadeth is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by Dave Mustaine, who was the original lead guitarist for Metallica. Mustaine was fired from Metallica in 1983 and formed Megadeth shortly after. The band's lineup has changed multiple times over the years, with Mustaine being the only consistent member.

Megadeth is considered one of the "big four" of thrash metal, along with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. The band has released 15 studio albums, four live albums, two compilation albums, and two EPs. Megadeth has sold over 50 million copies of their albums worldwide.

The band's most successful albums are Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? (1986), Rust in Peace (1990), and Countdown to Extinction (1992). These albums all debuted in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and were certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
