Beginnings
The group formed in Los Angeles in 1989. They were brought together by producer Glen Ballard, who had previously worked with Michael Jackson and Madonna. The three women were chosen for the group's distinctive harmonies, which were often compared to those of The Beach Boys and The Mamas & the Papas.
Success
Wilson Phillips released their debut album, also titled "Wilson Phillips", in 1990. The album was a huge success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. It spawned several hit singles, including "Hold On", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and "Release Me", which peaked at number two. The group also won several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Decline and Reunion
Wilson Phillips released two more albums, "Shadows and Light" (1992) and "The Dream Is Still Alive" (1993), but neither of these albums was as successful as their debut. The group disbanded in 1993 after Carnie and Wendy Wilson left to pursue solo careers.
In 2004, the group reunited and released a fourth album, "California". The album was moderately successful, but failed to match the success of their earlier work. The group continues to tour occasionally and released their fifth album, "Dedicated", in 2012.
