How to Create Your Own Band Font

Part of branding is creating stylistic consistency. This means consistently using the same logo and font. For your band you want a font that captures the essence of your music and, as it is continually used in printed materials, will grow to be part of your band's image. Generic free fonts are limited and too universal to be uniquely associated with your band. Use your creative talent to invent your own font.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pencil and a ruler to make 2 to 3-inch ruled rows on a sheet of paper.

    • 2

Draw your font. Consider what font characteristics will best suit your band's music. For example if your band plays industrial rock, you may want a bold, geometric font. If your band plays folk music, you may want a font that is more organic, with a handwritten feel. Use a drawing utensil that will best help you draw the chosen style. For bold font, use a permanent marker. For fine font, use a good pen. For fluid font, use ink with a dipping pen or paintbrush.

    • 3

Use a computer scanner to digitally convert your pages. Open the files in an imaging software program such as Photoshop. Save your images in black and white.

    • 4

Open the digital files in a font creation software program, such as Softy, Corel Draw, TypeTool, FontLab, FontForge or FontCreator. Follow the directions for the particular software to "cut out" each individual letter, number and symbol, turn them into glyphs, and create a systematized font that can then be uploaded into other programs to be used in your logo, other printed materials and your website.
