EVH Guitar Setup Specifications

Eddie Van Halen is one of the most influential guitarists in rock music. His screaming guitar solos are a product of experimentation and natural ability. Through years of trial and error EVH has perfected guitar settings to utilize his own personal playing style. EVH uses a style called "hammering," a technique that makes the guitarist sound like he's playing multiple notes rapidly.
  1. Strings

    • EVH Signature guitars are strung with Peavey extra-light strings. Most guitarist use a high-E string starting on a .10. Eddie's factory guitars start with a .009 and end on a .042. EVH factory guitars have the action set as low as possible. This makes the guitar easier to play because thin strings with low action provide less resistance. The procedure is to lower the strings to the point of buzz and then back it off just a bit.

    Body and Electronics

    • EVH guitars are 12 5/8 inches at the widest point. They are 1-inch thick and 36 5/8 inches long. They are made from basswood with a laminated maple top to give the guitar character. The guitar weights in at about 8 lbs. For electronics, EVH guitars are wired with two custom DiMarzio Humbucker pickups. There is one tone and one volume control pot, both 500K. There is one three-way toggle switch to switch from bridge to neck or both bridge and neck pickups together.

    Neck

    • The neck has a scale of 25 inches and a radius of 10 inches. The neck has a shorter-than-usual headstock at only 5 7/8 inches. It's equipped with Schaller M6LA tuners with pearl buttons. The neck has 22 frets, which are specially designed with a unique profile fretwire. The width at the nut is 1 5/8 inches, which is a bit narrower than most production guitars. The neck is solid maple and digitally carved.

    Tremelo Arm

    • Normal tremelo arms can compromise guitar tuning. EVH guitars use a non-floating Floyd Rose tremelo bridge, which preserves the bridge to guitar-body contact, giving the guitar a "stop tail piece" level of sustain and tone. On EVH's earlier guitars, he would place a quarter under the back of the tremelo arm to stop it from raising up at all.
