How to Get a CD Launched on Classic FM

The music business is vastly different than it was many years ago. Until the mid-to-late 1980s, a band could send unsolicited material to a record company. Since that time, intellectual property laws cause record labels to accept only solicited material or a recording presented by a band manager or representing attorney. Getting a CD on radio is a bit of a different process, but is still challenging, as most stations are corporately owned, a phenomenon known as consolidation.

Instructions

    • 1

Phone the FM station you want to play your CD. Ask for the name and phone number extension of the program director or station manager. Contact this person directly and ask to schedule a brief appointment.

    • 2

Create a short bio of your band and place it in the CD jacket. Include endorsements by any local club owners. Meet with the program director or station manager on time and be brief. Explain why your CD would fit their programming rotation.

    • 3

Follow up by phone within three to five days. Speak with the station manager or program director. If unavailable, leave a voicemail stating you will be in touch again in two to three business days.

    • 4

Take your CD to local record stores. Ask them to place it in their daily rotation. If they like it and sell copies, ask them to phone or email the program director or station manager stating its marketability.
