How to Get Music Onto Websites

Using the Internet to promote your music is a smart move. It cuts the cost of sending out CDs and it enables any person who has access to the Internet to hear your creative works. The challenge is getting your music on the right sites. There are sites that are dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of music, which are usually free. However such sites often feature a large volume of music from other artists. A little time spent researching which websites best suit your style of music will save time in future.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an MP3. This is a file format that compresses the song so that it can be downloaded and heard quickly. If your music is not already saved in MP3 format, convert it. Music player programs typically convert a song automatically to MP3 when you import a different file type. Put your CD into your computer's CD drive and click "open." Your default music player will convert and save the song. Once saved as an MP3, save the song to your desktop or another easy-to-find location.

    • 2

Upload your song to a music-hosting platform. There are many free music-hosting platforms, including MySpace and Sound Cloud. The latter allows you to embed your song in a music player on other sites. This means that people don't need to leave the site they are on to play your music. Sign up for a music-hosting site and upload your song in MP3 format from your computer. When prompted, include promotional information and photography where appropriate to help promote your music.

    • 3

Copy the embed-link code from the music-hosting platform. Click on your song on the music-hosting site. Select "get embed code" from the user panel and highlight the HTML code. Press CTRL+C to copy it and paste it into a blank document for safe keeping. Save the document as "Song Title embed code."

    • 4

Copy the embed code onto any social networking sites that you have an account with. This gives friends and fans the opportunity to share the song with their networks.

    • 5

Paste the embed-link code into the HTML editor of your site. If you have your own website, create a new page or a new post. Select "HTML editor" from the user panel or dashboard. Title the page or post with the name of the song. Copy the embed code into the HTML editor and hit "publish."

    • 6

Send the embed-code to owners and operators of other websites. Write an email with "music for review" in the subject box. Keep the message short and polite; ask the recipients to kindly review your song with a view to featuring it on their website. Include the embed code in the body of the email but also attach the MP3. The website editor may prefer to use an MP3 and host it on the site, rather than hosting an embedded music player.
