Ideas for Promotional Shots for a Band

With bands, it is vital to take promotional shots to establish a group identity. Band promo shots are particularly useful for marketing a band and getting its name out to the public. For successful band pictures, the point is to capture the style and concept of the group in an interesting and eye-catching manner.
  1. Digital Photography

    • When it comes to photography, the question of digital vs. film always exists. Both digital and 35-millimeter photography have their pros and cons. For band promotional shots, it can be convenient to utilize digital photography to reduce processing fees and for quicker turnaround. Most up-and-coming bands, after all, aren't high on funds. Film still has at least one advantage: the photograph negative allows for much higher resolution contrasted with high-end digital cameras, as of April 2011. However, the highest resolution film also comes at a high cost -- which makes digital photography the most economical option.

    Theme

    • Musicians are artists, and promo shots are just one of the ways in which they can express themselves. To create an exciting and fascinating portrait, it helps to have a theme. Although many bands take relatively straightforward group photos, a fun theme can go a long way in getting a band attention. Consider costumes and props, carefully directed lighting and exotic locations. Some ideas for themed location shoots include beaches, forests, junkyards and farms. Think outside the box and determine what fits the band's personality and perhaps even its sense of humor. For a more spontaneous and "natural" approach, consider taking live pictures of the band as it performs music onstage in front of an audience.

    Attire

    • With promotional shots, band members carefully need to plan their attire. If all members arrive in whatever they happened to be wearing that day, it can create a disorganized-looking photograph. Establish an atmosphere of cohesion and unity within the band by planning apparel. This doesn't mean that the entire band needs to be wearing the same suit, but there should be an element of synchronization with all of the outfits. This includes a common color scheme or accessory.

    Personality

    • The best bands in history are those that ooze with personality and charm, from The Rolling Stones to The Beatles. Avoid stiff-looking promotional shots by capturing the personalities of all the band members. Encapsulate the band in its genuine state. If the drummer has a wacky sense of humor, capture that quality by encouraging him to make a funny motion. If the singer is "the heartthrob," capture him with a "come hither" look in his eyes. Draw out each member's specific asset to convey his strength.

    Composition

    • Composition is crucial when taking band promotional shots. Go for a sense of fluidity when positioning the band members. Make the composition and layout of the photograph look as natural and smooth as possible. A common idea includes positioning the vocalist and any other standout band members in the front; but to keep the vibe fresh and interesting -- and avoid other band members' potential jealousy from not getting prime placement in the shoot -- rearrange the positioning of the members.
