What Are the Similarities Between American and English Styles of Music?

The United States and England often give birth to musical stars and legends with similar musical styles. In fact, many people do not even realize which country some of the singers or bands are from because of the similarities. Whether it is the style, genre or general feel of the music, you can readily spot similarities when you compare American and English styles of music to each other.
  1. Rise to Fame

    • Famous U.K. bands and producers record, tour and write while in the U.S.

Because the main language of both countries is English, many aspiring artists travel between the U.S. and the U.K. during their rise to fame. Because so many stateside musicians and British musicians spend time in both countries, these musicians are often influenced by the sounds and creative styles that each country has to offer. Also, many musicians or groups use producers from the opposite country, and those producers always add their own twists to the music based on their influences and experiences.

    Rock

    • Of the many styles of music born in the U.S., rock has had the most impact on the U.K. The two countries have further developed this musical genre, and legendary music has been the result. Songs from bands such as the Beatles and Queen are played all over America without people even realizing that these bands are not American. These bands offer different rock sounds or styles that are popular in America and follow the same basic band setup of having a lead singer, guitarists, a bassist and a drummer.

    Pop

    • Pop music can sound almost identical to rock music -- as is common in pop rock -- or it can be completely synthesized. Pop is a lighter style of music that both countries enjoy, and it almost always has a happy feel to it. While American groups such as Big Time Rush, Boyz II Men, Destiny's Child and 'N Sync all rose to international fame, similar groups and musicians such as the Spice Girls; Take That; and Robbie Williams, who left Take That to be an extremely successful solo artist, are some of the U.K.'s contributions to pop music.

    Dance, Hip-Hop and Soul

    • It is no secret that both countries love to dance, and dance music is a very special style of music because it is usually pop music of the rock, hip-hop or techno genres that is specifically designed for social dancing. Energetic anthems, soulful tunes, folk music, dance themes and other popular songs often rise to extreme fame for a few weeks, but are overplayed and quickly overshadowed by new songs before they can reach legendary status.
