How are viola tuned?

The viola is tuned in fifths, like the violin, cello, and double bass. The strings, from lowest to highest, are tuned to C, G, D, and A. This tuning is an octave lower than the violin, and a fifth lower than the cello.

Here is a more detailed explanation of how to tune a viola:

1. Start with the A string. Use a tuning fork or electronic tuner to tune the A string to 440 Hz.

2. Tune the D string. Play the open D string and adjust the tuning peg until it sounds in tune with the A string.

3. Tune the G string. Play the open G string and adjust the tuning peg until it sounds in tune with the D string.

4. Tune the C string. Play the open C string and adjust the tuning peg until it sounds in tune with the G string.

Once all four strings are tuned, you can check the tuning by playing double stops and chords. Make sure that the strings sound in tune with each other, and that there are no wolf tones (notes that sound out of tune when played).

If you are having trouble tuning your viola, you can take it to a professional luthier for assistance.
