How to Choose a High Definition Antenna

A high definition television antenna will allow you to watch your local television channels in high definition for free. This works, of course, only if your local networks broadcast in high definition. The Federal Communications Commission has mandated that if you use an analog television antenna to receive television broadcasts, you should be able to use that same antenna to receive HD signals. You may want to try receiving HD on your current antenna before deciding to try purchase a new antenna.

Know the facts. Different television antennas have different properties that make them better for certain applications; however, there is no such thing as a high definition antenna. Some antennas are better for high definition reception than others, but do not be tricked into paying a higher price for a special high definition antenna.

    • 2

Check your television to make sure that it has a built-in high definition tuner. The HD tuner converts the HD signal you receive into the picture you see on your screen, so your HD antenna will receive a signal you can't use if it does not have a HD tuner.

    • 3

If your television does not have a high definition tuner you will need to purchase an external one prior to receiving any HD broadcasts.

    • 4

Decide between an indoor or outdoor antenna. Outdoor antennas generally work best, but you can use an indoor antenna if you are close to the HD broadcasts you want to receive.

    • 5

Decide between a directional or multi-directional (omni-directional antenna). Directional antennas are a bit stronger than their multi-directional counterparts, but they an only receive signals that are coming from the direction in which they are pointed.
