TV Link Alternative

Don't you hate it when you overhear coworkers discussing last night's episode of "True Blood" and you can't join in since you don't get HBO? Or how you always wanted to get into "Lost" but know you would never understand it after missing earlier seasons? Luckily, the Internet provides alternatives that allow viewers to catch the latest episodes of their favorite shows at their convenience. You just have to know where to look. Here are a few favorite sites and their pros and cons.
  1. Hulu.com

    • Pros: Hulu is where you will find some of the best picture quality. The site has a decent response time---most of its regular shows are available the morning after they air. Hulu also has collections of older shows, such as the first and only season of the teen hit "My So-Called Life" and all episodes of "Arrested Development." For anyone who wants to get into "Lost", Hulu has the first five seasons. Cons: 15 to 30 second commercials interrupt each program every eight minutes. This isn't much considering how long the commercials are on the actual television, but Hulu is one of the only TV link sites with commercials. Hulu's selection is also inferior to other sites.

    Sidereel.com

    • Pros: This site has the quickest response time. You can often find an episode link on this site mere minutes after airtime. If you're eager to watch a show as soon as possible, Sidereel is the way to go. Cons: You should also be wary about which links you click on Sidereel---if the site tells you to do a survey to unlock the video, run for the hills.

    Surfthechannel.com

    • Pros: Surfthechannel has one of the largest collection of TV shows and movies. The links are usually high quality. The site's response time is good, though there have been times when a program won't show up for a few days. Cons: One of the main sites Surfthechannel links to is Megavideo. This site has good picture quality but it will only play for 72 minutes before asking the viewer to either pay to upgrade to its unlimited service or wait 54 minutes to continue viewing.

    OVGuide

    • Pros: If you're lazy, OVGuide is the way to go. It searches several sites (including the ones already mentioned) for you, saving you the hassle. Cons: Be very, very careful of which sites you click. OVGuide includes many more virus-friendly sites than other video search engines.

    GoogleVideo

    • Pros: I'm surprised more people don't use this option. GoogleVideo searches YouTube and a host of other video sources. Cons: GoogleVideo is often better for finding clips than full-length TV shows. Also, you need to be very specific with your searches since Google has a lot more material from which to draw than other video sites.
