How to Submit Story Ideas to Television

Every season, television networks are looking to improve their ratings with a new hit show. Rather than sit on the couch and think that you can do better, you can write and submit your own TV show ideas. This can not only be a source of income, but it will also be gratifying to see your ideas on the screen. Although millions of ideas get rejected by TV networks every year, you may have the next award-winning concept.

Write a logline. This is a one-line description of what your story is essentially about. Read professional loglines to get an idea of how one should be composed. Write a few practice loglines and ask for your family and friends' feedback.

Register your idea with the Writers Guild of America. Go to the WGA Web site. Although a small fee is required, you will be able to keep your idea on file for at least five years. The WGA will then mail you a certificate with your own unique number. Save this document in a safe location.

Write a script for the pilot episode. Use double spacing and structure it so that one page is equal to one minute of TV time. Read sample pilots of past TV shows for ideas on how to write yours. Center your name, the title of the series, title of the episode, and the WGA registration number on the top of the cover page.

Write a query. This is a letter to the television network explaining why your story should get picked up. Create a captivating introduction that includes your logline and explains why your story is worth airing. The next paragraph is where you include your writing experience if you have any. Close with a thank-you and say that you are looking forward to hearing back from them.

Submit the query. Address it to the network and wait for a reply. If the network is in fact interested, they will want you to submit a copy of the pilot episode. You will then be notified if your pilot has been accepted or if you need to make any changes.
