What was the first word said on tv?

The first word spoken on television was "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," spoken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 30, 1939.

This was during a demonstration of the new technology at the 1939 New York World's Fair. While the transmission was only to a limited audience, it marked the official beginning of television broadcasting in the United States.
