The Effects of Television on the Public As a Media

Television has affected every segment of modern society. While it does have its share of critics who blame television for the many corruptions in our society, there are benefits as well, such as fostering sharing, good manners and cooperation, especially in shows designed for children. Since almost every household has a television set, you should be careful not to replace other more active and meaningful pursuits, like reading or exercising, with television.
  1. Social

    • The general public likes the excitement and the passive entertainment that television provides. You live vicariously through the onscreen characters, and are drawn into fantasy worlds that you would probably never experience. As a stress suppressor, television allows you to laugh at the humorous escapades of the characters or have lively debates over an issue presented on a show, enhancing communication skills.

    Psychological

    • Although television can be a powerful learning tool--instructing, encouraging and inspiring us--it is a highly influential media and should be curbed when it showcases violence or other negative types of shows in a context which glamorizes or trivializes it. Aggressive behavior spawned by violence on television should take personality differences of the perpetrators into account and the context in which television is viewed, such as slapstick comedy which is meant to be funny, not violent.

    Political

    • Television serves to inform and stimulate the political interests of the electorate. Congressional hearings, nominating conventions and political debates are all televised, giving rise to an immediacy that comes at a high price. Because candidates spend millions of dollars on television advertising, they need to raise more and more money, so they end up owing favors to special interest groups. The political process becomes trivialized by the impact of the candidate's advertising rather than his political views.

    Educational

    • Television has impacted the way you learn about the world. Current events are visible every day, and you learn about other people or other cultures in a much more meaningful way. Reading about these same topics in newspapers and magazines does not have the same effect as actually seeing them. As a head start in education, children are exposed to educational shows very early and learn letters and words before they start to school.
