Why is reverend hale brought to Salem village in the crucible?

In the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, Reverend John Hale is not brought to Salem Village. Rather, he is a resident of Beverly who travels to Salem to investigate the witchcraft accusations. He believes that he can use his knowledge of theology and the Bible to discern the truth and help the afflicted girls. However, once he arrives in Salem, he becomes increasingly troubled by the methods used to determine guilt and the escalating hysteria within the community.
