How did ragtime begin?

Ragtime began in the African-American communities of Missouri in the late 1800s and was first popularized by Black pianists and composers through minstrel shows and vaudeville performances featuring syncopated, or 'ragged time,' melodies played over a regular two-beat rhythm or march-like bass-patterns known as the ‘ostinato bass.’
