Why does Damon salvatore want to open the tomb in season one of vampire diaries?

In season one of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore isn't interested in opening the tomb. That falls to his brother, Stefan. Stefan wants to see if Katherine survived after being trapped inside for decades.
