How to Write a Film Script Voiceover

Writing a film script or screenplay for a movie is a lot of fun and allows you to be creative and get the scenes in your head down on paper. However, there is a specific format to follow when writing a film script. It must be clear which character is assigned to what piece of dialogue. For voiceovers, you must correctly attribute that line or lines to the character as well as note that it is a voiceover and not present in the actual live scene.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the scene heading for the scene that contains the voiceover part in all caps. Include whether the scene is indoors (interior) or outdoors (exterior), the locations, and the time of day. For example: EXT. CENTRAL PARK - EARLY MORNING.

    • 2

Write the action or stage direction, if there is any, that takes place just before or during the voiceover part. For example, "A couple on a bicycle for two rides past Maggie as she strolls through the park."

    • 3

Write the character's name, followed by V.O. for voiceover in parentheses. Write the voiceover line beneath the character's name. Do not use quotation marks unless the character is quoting someone else. If this is the first appearance of the character in this scene, write her name in all caps. For example: MAGGIE (V.O.), Everywhere I go, I'm reminded of Jim.
